The central government on Saturday dismissed reports and social media posts about vandalisation of a mosque in Tripura as “fake” and “complete misrepresentation of facts”. The statement of the Union Home Ministry came in the wake of protests and violence in Maharashtra's Amaravati district over such reports.

“The mosque in Dargabazar area of Kakraban has not been damaged and the Tripura Police in Gomati district is working to maintain peace and tranquillity,” the MHA said.

The home ministry said there is no reported case of damage to the structure of any mosque in Tripura in the recent past. “There is no report of simple or grievous injury or rape or death of any person in these incidents as alleged in some social media posts,” it said.

The MHA also urged people to maintain calm and not be misguided by such fake reports, while expressing concerns over the incidents of violence in Maharashtra.

Internet services were shut down and a four-day curfew was imposed on Saturday in Maharashtra's Amravati city which witnessed fresh violence during a bandh. A mob hurled stones at shops during the bandh allegedly organised by local BJP workers in protest against the rallies organized by Muslim organisations the day before to condemn the recent violence in Tripura.

Over eight thousand people gathered outside the Amravati district collector's office on Friday to submit a memorandum demanding that atrocities against a minority community in Tripura and other places be stopped. When people were leaving after submitting the memorandum, stone-pelting took place at three places between Chitra Chowk and Cotton Market under the limits of the Kotwali police station.
