The Chennai corporation has been running kitchens—from as early as 3am—in the city for the past three days, dishing out more than 12 lakh food packets to those displaced due to floods.

“We have set up kitchens in more than 15 places to prepare hygienic food for those are displaced and affected by floods,” a revenue official told THE WEEK. The officer said that free food, through both Amma canteens and corporation kitchens, will be served till the rains subside and normality is restored.

The food is inspected by the health inspector before being packed and distributed. On Wednesday, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited one of the kitchens where he was served pongal by the Local Administration Minister K.N. Nehru and HR and CE minister P.K. Sekar Babu.
