The accused in the rape and murder of a minor in Hyderabad has been found dead on a railway track, media reports emerged on Thursday. The rape incident had sent political shockwaves through Telangana, resulting in protests by the opposition BJP, Congress and others. According to multiple reports, the police claimed the man was trying to run away when he jumped in front of a train. The accused, M. Raju, was a neighbour of the minor, who was accused of abducting her from her home. According to reports, her body was found wrapped in his house, and the accused had gone missing.

The death news comes after a state minister spoke of "encounter" against the accused. Telangana Labour Minister Ch Malla Reddy on Tuesday asserted that the accused in the case would be caught, and that there should be an "encounter" against him. "There is no question of leaving him," he told reporters.

The rape incident had triggered protests by residents of the locality, who raised slogans and demanded justice and quick arrest of the culprit. They staged a road roko on September 10 morning, demanding justice and various kinds of help to the girl's family and that higher ups like a minister visit the place. Hyderabad District Collector L. Sharman, who had visited the spot, promised them a house under the government's two-bedroom housing scheme for the poor, besides education to the victim's siblings.

An immediate financial assistance of Rs 50,000 was given to the family by the government. The protest by the residents was called off after the authorities spoke to them and following the assurances by the collector.
