The BJP on Friday announced that Priyanka Tibrewal would be its candidate for the Assembly bypoll in Bhabanipur. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting from Bhabanipur. Mamata had won from Bhabanipur in the 2011 and 2016 Assembly polls.

Tibrewal had earned a reputation for being among lawyers who had pushed for a probe into the violence against BJP supporters after the Assembly polls this year.

Tibrewal, who is 40, joined the BJP in 2014. She is considered an acolyte of former Union minister Babul Supriyo, having worked as his legal counsel.

Tibrewal was made vice-president of the state Yuva Morcha in August last year. Tibrewal had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election from Entally this year and also the 2015 Kolkata municipal polls, losing both times to the TMC.

Tibrewal had also become popular as a spokesperson of the BJP.

Speaking to News 18 before her nomination was announced, Tibrewal had said, "If my party fields me from Bhabanipur against Mamata Banerjee, I will give my best and I am hopeful that people will support me in this battle of justice vs injustice… I am sure people will vote against the misrule of ruling TMC...|"

In addition to Tibrewal, the BJP has nominated Sujit Das as the candidate for the Janigipur bypoll and Milan Ghosh as the candidate for Samersganj.
