A week ago, news emerged that a 45-year-old Indian man who was sentenced to death for killing a boy in a road accident in the UAE would be set free.

Becks Krishnan, who was working in Abu Dhabi, was arrested for reckless driving and murder when his car rammed into a group of children in Abu Dhabi in September 2012, killing a Sudanese child.

The freedom of Becks Krishnan was secured with the intervention of M.A. Yusuffali, chairman of the Lulu Group, who paid the 'blood money', equivalent to nearly Rs 1 crore, to the victim's family to secure pardon for Krishnan.

On Wednesday morning, Becks Krishnan finally reached his home state of Kerala. He was received at the Cochin International Airport by his wife, Veena, and son Advaith.

Krishnan was quoted by Khaleej Times as saying, “This is a second lease of life for me. I am very happy. I am back home because of Yusuffali. Ever since he intervened in my case, I had renewed hope in my life." His wife also expressed gratitude to the head of the Lulu Group.

The Hindu reported that Krishnan was advised by a passenger on his flight home to "mend his ways". “I just remained silent. I did not tell him that I was not so cold-blooded to kill a child my son’s age. Hopefully, things will improve with time and I would be able to shed the stamp of a murderer some day,” Krishnan was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Yusuffali downplayed his contribution to the release of Krishnan. He was quoted by Khaleej Times as saying, "I am not trying to do sadaqa (charity) following my chopper accident. I paid the compensation amount in January. He [Krishnan] is a young man and has a family. You can’t measure the value of a life with money. Now he has reached home."

Yusuffali suffered minor injuries in a helicopter crash in Kochi earlier this year.
