Telangana will go under lockdown from 10am on May 12 (Wednesday) to May 21 to arrest the surge in COVID-19 cases.
The decision to impose a lockdown came after the cabinet of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao met on Tuesday to take stock of the situation.
Telangana had been observing a night curfew from 9pm to 5am, which was to stay in effect until May 15. While details of guidelines for the lockdown have not been released yet, the government said all essential activities and services would be permitted from 6am to 10am.
Rao had not been in favour of a lockdown until recently. He had been quoted by News 18 as saying, “Telangana is the most happening state, with about 25 to 30 lakh migrant labourers earning their livelihood, and their lives were ruined during the first spell of lockdown in 2020. If these people are dislocated once again, it will be a huge loss to the state as Telangana needs a huge number of workers during the harvesting season."
On Tuesday, a Telangana High Court bench comprising Chief Justice Hima Kohli and Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy expressed concern over the COVID-19 situation in the state. The court observed “the current night curfew is very cosmetic in nature," The News Minute reported.
