The Delhi Police has begun inquest proceedings in the case of alleged suicide by BJP MP Ram Swaroop Sharma, who was found hanging at his residence in Delhi's North Avenue on Wednesday morning.

As per law, inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code are carried out in the case of ''unnatural death''. Delhi Police sources said, prima facie, there seems to be no foul play and it appears to be a case of suicide. But inquest proceedings are under way, said sources, and Delhi Police is awaiting the postmortem report.

Ram Swaroop Sharma (62) had been living with two members of his staff—his personal assistant and cook—in Gomti Apartments, while his family members were not there. The family has been informed about his sudden death, and further inquiries are being carried out to ascertain the cause of suicide.

Sources in Delhi Police said Sharma was an early riser, habitually waking up at 6.30am. He was suffering from some health issues, including blood pressure. When he did not wake up at his scheduled time, the aides knocked on his door. The door was locked from inside and after there was no response to the knocking, they called on his mobile phone.

The phone kept ringing, but there was no answer. Following this, the aides got suspicious and called the Delhi Police Control Room (PCR) at 7.45am. The police came and broke open the door, and the Parliamentarian was found hanging from the ceiling, said police sources.

Sharma was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

''After the postmortem, we will be able to ascertain the exact cause of death,'' said a Delhi Police spokesperson.

Sharma, who hails from Jalpehar village in Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, was a two-time member of Parliament. He was elected to the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha from Mandi parliamentary constituency in 2014 and 2019, respectively.
