Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is returning to the world of Sherlock Holmes. It has been revealed that the crime cinema veteran is involved as a director on the upcoming Young Sherlock, which will explore the iconic sleuth's formative years. The Prime Video series is based on Andy Lane's book series of the same name, and is said to be different from the 1985 series Young Sherlock Holmes.

The official logline is as follows: “With all the wit and charm of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes feature films, Young Sherlock follows the origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character’s early days. Sherlock Holmes is a disgraced young man – raw and unfiltered – when he finds himself wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his liberty. His first-ever case unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy that changes his life forever. Unfolding in 1870s Oxford and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident.”

Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who played the younger self of Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince essays the eponymous figure.

In an interaction with Collider, Tiffin said, “What we’re doing is recreating this character, but before we initially meet him, so it’s about getting the measurements right on how much of Sherlock to put in there and how many glimpses to put in of who Sherlock is going to become, because you want to see him,” Tiffin told Collider. “In any origin story, you want to see how they got to where they are.”

It's not clear how many episodes Ritchie is directing, but one assumes at least a couple, as he did in two other popular crime properties — Neflix's The Gentlemen spinoff and Paramount's MobLand.

Oscar winner Colin Firth ("Kingsman", "The King's Speech") plays Sir Bucephalus Hodge while Dónal Finn has been cast as Moriarty. Natasha McElhone is in the role of Sherlock’s mother, Cordelia Holmes, and Joseph Fiennes plays his father, Silas Holmes. Interestingly, Tiffin is Joseph's real-life nephew.
