V.K. Sasikala, close aide of former Tamil Nadu chief minister late Jayalalithaa, on Wednesday, announced her decision to quit active politics.

In a two-page statement, she also urged the AIADMK cadre to stay united and defeat the DMK in the upcoming assembly elections. "I urge the party cadre to work to keep her (Jayalalithaa) legacy going," she wrote.

A month after she returned from Prappana Aghrahara prison in Bengaluru following completion of a four-year term in an assets case, Sasikala who wanted to be in active politics, has suddenly expressed her decision to stay away from politics. It is to be noted that Sasikala has been quite active since February 24—Jayalalithaa's birthday—meeting a few political leaders like Seeman, Sarath Kumar among others.

While there were several talks about her plans to take over the AIADMK, her announcement to quit politics has sent mixed feelings in the Tamil Nadu political circles.

In her statement, addressing Jayalalithaa as her elder sister, Sasikala said, “The true followers of Amma should strive to fight against the evil DMK and aim to establish the government of Amma. I never wanted any post or power. I am always thankful to the people of Tamil Nadu. I am quitting politics and I pray to my sister and god for establishing Amma's golden rule. The true followers of Amma should strive to fight against the evil DMK and aim to establish the government of Amma."
