The Karnataka government on Wednesday passed the anti-cow slaughter bill in the state assembly amid uproar and walkout by opposition parties which termed it as an anti-Constitutional step.
The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill – 2020 was introduced by Haj, Wakf and Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chauhan, prompting the Congress MLAs led by leader of opposition Siddaramaiah and Janata Dal (S) legislators led by party state president H.D. Kumaraswamy to troop into the well of the house to protest.
The opposition parties alleged that the bill was not discussed for tabling in the Business Advisory Committee meeting. “They have to circulate copies of the Bill to all members. Even with the minister there was no copy of the bill. This is a breach of privilege. That is why we are opposing it. The sanctity of the house has gone," Siddaramiah said.

However, Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kaageri rejected their charges. Following this, the Congress decided to boycott the session while the JD(S) MLAs staged a walkout.
Siddaramaiah has called a Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting on Thursday.
Earlier, after the bill was tabled in the house, the BJP members brought a few cows to the Vidhana Soudha and performed a puja for them.
“Our government under Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa is on its way to honour yet another of its promise,” tweeted the party state unit.
