DMK president M.K. Stalin, on Tuesday, urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to convene a special session of the Tamil Nadu assembly immediately and pass resolutions against the Farm Acts.

In a letter to the chief minister, he asked Palaniswami to move the Supreme Court and challenge the legality of the Farm Acts, as he claimed that the Centre infringes upon the state rights.

"Only the states have the authority and complete right to frame laws. Agriculture is in the State List as per the Indian Constitution. Issues of land and land tenure are in the State List. If one reads provisions 46, 47, 48 together under the State List, only states have the right to frame laws on agriculture. Hence, we cannot be silent when the Centre infringes on the State’s rights. This is unacceptable,” Stalin said in his letter.

The DMK has already moved the Supreme Court based on the federal rights given by the Constitution, against the three farm legislations passed by the Central government in the Parliament, Stalin noted. Stating that the farmers are the backbone of the economy, Stalin said, "Only states can get to know the needs of farmers, fulfil them and protect them. It has been the state government that has saved farmers from middlemen and ensured that they get a fair price for their produce, all these years."

As the leader of opposition, he urged chief minister to convene a special assembly session immediately and pass resolutions against the farm legislations. "I urge you to convene the state assembly to debate on the farm legislations that will cause immense and long-term harm to farmers and pass a resolution against the Farm Acts," he said.
