Four policemen and four municipal corporation workers were suspended in Uttar Pradesh after video clips, which have gone viral on social media, showed the body of man who died in front of a government office being taken away in a garbage van.

According to reports, the body of 42-year-old Mohd Anwar was bundled into the garbage van and taken to police station over fears of coronavirus infection.

The incident took place in Balrampur district on Wednesday evening. Anwar had gone to the local government office, but he collapsed and died near the office gate, NDTV reported. Multiple video clips have shown his body lying on the ground with policemen watching.

Balrampur police commissioner Devranjan Verma condemned the incident and called it an “inhuman act of negligence”. He said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

“This is very wrong on the part of the police and the municipal corporation workers. Even if the person was a COVID-19 suspect he should have been handled with a PPE suit,” Verma told reporters.
