In a shocking incident on Sunday evening, a COVID-19 positive patient who was accused of attacking a police and health team in Chandan Nagar in Indore, escaped from the isolation ward of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur where he was undergoing treatment.

The accused managed to escape even though 15 police personnel had been deployed to keep a watch over him, sources said.

The Jabalpur police have announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone giving information on the accused Javed Khan, who was sent out to Jabalpur jail after being slapped with the stringent National Security Act (NSA), following the Indore attack incident.

Jabalpur superintendent of police, Amit Singh, told THE WEEK that over 10 teams are actively searching for accused Javed Khan and he will be arrested later in the night. The SP said that the accused has no option but to escape on foot and therefore he will be caught soon.

Sources said that the escape of Khan was noticed when the doctors came for evening round in the isolation ward on Sunday. It is being suspected that some employee of the hospital might have helped the accused in escaping. Police personnel posted there have said that they have only seen persons, apparently hospital staff, wearing PPE kits leave the hospital and therefore it is being suspected that the accused might have used a PPE kit to escape.

Khan was among four accused of Chandan Nagar attack incident who were sent to Jabalpur Central Jail after NSA was invoked on them. However, they were quarantined in isolation wards before being allowed to enter the jail and following tests, Khan had been found positive, while three other accused were found negative. The three were shifted to isolation cells within the jail and Khan was kept in isolation ward of the medical college.
