With anticipation building on how exactly the nationwide lockdown will be extended, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 10am on Tuesday. Tuesday marks the last day of the 21-day lockdown.

The announcement of the speech was made by the official Twitter handle of the Prime Minister's Office on Monday.

Since the prime minister met with chief ministers on Saturday to discuss the fight against the coronavirus, there was been speculation Modi would address the nation again to spell out the contours of an extension of the lockdown. Both Modi and most chief ministers had agreed that the lockdown would have to be extended given the continued emergence of coronavirus cases.

However, Modi had indicated the need for restarting economic activities, given the adverse toll of the lockdown.

This would be Modi's fourth address to the nation on the coronavirus issue in less than a month. Modi last addressed the nation live on March 24 to announce the 21-day lockdown. Then he had issued a recorded message on April 3.
