A total of 227 fresh cases of novel coronavirus and three deaths were reported in India in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 1251. The death toll climbed to 32.

Addressing a press meet, Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said the latest deaths were reported from Gujarat, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the ministry, the sudden increase in the number of confirmed cases was due to the delay in informing the authorities.

“To contain the spread of coronavirus, the ministry is working with the state governments on finding the contacts of the new cases which have been confirmed,” Aggarwal said.

Maharashtra continued to be the state with most number of positive cases, followed by Kerala and Uttar Pradesh. With five more persons testing positive in Maharashtra on Tuesday morning, the total number of confirmed cases in the state reached 230.

Meanwhile, the entire area of the southwest Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti and Nizamuddin west was sanitised by the sanitation workers on Tuesday even as the Delhi Police continued to evacuate people.
