Gujarat announces free food for elderly during COVID-19 lockdown

As citizens remain indoors during the 21-day lockdown in the country, the BJP ruled government in Gujarat on Thursday announced to provide free of cost food to elderly persons staying alone at home.

According to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, the facility is for those elderly people who in normal course order tiffin at home. 

The facility will be available in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Surat, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Vadodara and Junagadh.

The arrangement has been made with the help of voluntary organizations.

While it is difficult to make a list of elderly people getting tiffin services, the state government has released the names of coordinating persons so that elderly people can contact them and order food.

The state government said that in Ahmedabad, Prashant Pandya can be reached on helpline number 155303, R.C. Patel in Surat on 9824345560, Krishna Solanki in Vadodara on 0265-2459502, Chetan Ganatra in Rajkot on 0281-2476874, A.K. Vastani in Jamnagar on 0288-2553417, D.M. Gohil in Bhavnagar on 0278-2424814/15, Amit Singhai in Gandhinagar on 9909954709 and Hitesh Vamja in Junagadh on 9898146865.

These coordinating officers will also ensure that elderly people get essential commodities at their doorstep.
