Suspended Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain surrendered at a Delhi court on Thursday. He was absconding after he was accused in the murder of an IB officer during the violence in Delhi last week. Hussain had earlier said that he intended to surrender.

Hussain was taken into custody by the Delhi Police after he surrendered before a court. The ex-AAP councillor was booked in the murder case of Ankit Sharma, an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer whose body was found in a drain near Chand Bagh area in northeast Delhi, where the violence broke out.

As he surrendered, Hussain reiterated that was a riot himself and innocent. He said that he along with his family left their home in Delhi after informing the police as they tried to escape rioters. He said that he left his home in the presence of the police and they were taken to a safe location.

He added that the death of Ankit Sharma was unfortunate, and that the police would order an impartial probe into the matter.

Ankit Sharma’s family had accused Hussain of being behind the killing, and had registered an FIR with the police.

Hussain, who was suspended from the Aam Aadmi Party, denied his involvement in the IB officer’s death and said that these were baseless accusations. On Tuesday, he had moved a Delhi court for anticipatory bail in the case, but the hearing was deferred.
