Days after a youth opened fire at the anti-CAA protesters at Jamia Millia Islamia, injuring a student, a similar incident was reported on Saturday from Shaheen Bagh where a man fired two rounds in air near the protest site. The man was overpowered by locals and handed over to police.

No one was injured in the incident which occurred at 4:53 pm. Hundreds of people, mainly women, have been protesting at Shaheen Bagh for over a month against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The man claimed to be Kapil Gujjar, a resident of Dallupura village near Noida border.

Reports said a few days ago, a local contractor armed with a gun had come to the site and asked the people to end the protest.

On Thursday, a youth from Uttar Pradesh had opened fire at the protesters, injuring Jamia student Shadab Farooq, before walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting "Yeh lo aazadi" amid heavy police presence.

The accused, a juvenile, was later arrested and was sent to a 14-day protective custody by the Juvenile Justice Board.

The attacks on anti-CAA protesters come amid the provocative statements by the BJP leaders in Delhi which goes to polls on February 8.

On January 30, party spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga  courted controversy by dubbing Shaheen Bagh—where women are spearheading a protest against the CAA and the National Register of Citizen (NRC)—as a “hub of treason”.

Bagga went on to say that Shaheen Bagh will see a surgical strike on February 11 after results of  Delhi assembly elections are out. Bagga is the BJP candidate from Hari Nagar.

On the same day, a top BJP functionary termed Shaheen Bagh as Shaitani (devil's) Bagh. "We will not let Delhi become Syria and allow them to run an ISIS-like module here, where women and kids are used. They are trying to create fear in the minds of people of Delhi by blocking the main route. We will not let this happen,” tweeted BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh.
