Meghna Das, a Zomato food delivery executive, has received a Congress ticket to fight the upcoming Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) elections.

Contesting from the Mannagudda ward, Das is building her campaign on a promise to improve the conditions of toads in the area, which she says are full of potholes.

Das, a literature graduate, had earlier worked with Hewlett Packard in Bengaluru, following which she moved to Dubai.

Speaking to ANI, Das said, “When I came back to India, I tried looking for a job. But in Mangaluru, finding a job that fetches a salary of over Rs 15,000 is a difficult task. So, I joined Zomato as food delivery executive.”

She told the agency that she had fallen a lot due to the bad roads in the ward, and that she felt that since she travelled a lot and knew the ward’s problems closely, she would be able to serve people.

Das said she got her break after a friend who worked with the Congress heard her problems, and introduced her to a senior party member. The senior leader asked her to contest the MCC elections. Following this, she got a ticket. “If by God’s grace, the voters support me and allow me to win, I’d focus on the betterment of roads, the safety of women, drainage facilities and water problems. I have seen a lot of problems in my ward and I want the best for it.”

The Congress Party in Karnataka released its manifesto for the MCC elections on November 6, promising to provide water facilities, drainage under the ADB project, and the priority construction of roads, footpaths, underpasses and railway crossings, as well as vehicle parking facilities, and the construction of circles and bus stands.

The BJP, in turn, has promised a “Clean, orderly city” with a thrust on basic civic amenities, including road, drinking water, power, as well as a focus on health, cleanliness, tourism and environment. Among their candidates is a survivor of thyroid-cancer, Jassel Viola D'Souza, who is contesting from Bendur.

The corporation polls are scheduled to be held on November 12.
