The husband of a local Bharatiya Janata Party leader was allegedly beaten up near Delhi Gate in Aligarh by a group of people over his wife's participation in party's membership drive in the city.

"Seven to eight people attacked me inside my office on August 8. They said my wife should not speak anything on triple talaq and this is not in their religion. They threatened that they will not let my wife work in the BJP," said Mohammad Mohsin, husband of BJP minority wing leader Farheen Mohsin.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Aligarh city, Abhishek said a case had been filed and necessary action would be taken against the guilty.

Later, talking to news agency ANI, Farheen said there were many women from her community who wanted to join the BJP.

“I enroll members under the BJP membership drive. Muslims women have aspirations from Modiji after the triple talaq bill was passed. Every Muslim woman wants to join the BJP. Many orthodox people in my neighbourhood can't see their women stepping out of their houses,” she said.

Farheen said she had received death threats, asking her to stop her work.

“Some people came and abused us. They also have beaten up my husband," she said.
