The Supreme Court on Wednesday listed the developments in the Unnao rape case for hearing on Thursday. On July 28, the Unnao rape survivor and her family met with an accident when the car they were travelling in to Rae Bareli was hit by a truck. Two of the survivor's aunts died while she and her lawyer were critically injured.

The Supreme asked the Uttar Pradesh authorities to file a status report by Thursday on the accident of the Unnao rape case victim.

The statement from Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi came after lawyer V. Giri requested urgent listing of the case under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Giri had been appointed amicus curae in a suo motu case registered by the Supreme Court to speed up child trials.

The Unnao survivor was a minor when she alleged she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in the case.

The chief justice also sought a report from the secretary general of the Supreme Court on why a letter from the Unnao survivor to him was not delivered. Gogoi told, “This morning I read in the papers that the Unnao victim had written to the Supreme Court. I was informed about the letter yesterday.”

The letter from the victim was reportedly sent on July 12 and referred to threats to her and family.

Gogoi noted he had not seen the letter, saying “It is yet to be placed before me”.
