Several civilians were injured after a grenade that militants lobbed towards a police station exploded on a busy road in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening. Reports said at least 10 people have been rushed to a hospital after the attack.

Police have launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area. "Three critically injured civilians have been shifted to hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment," a police source said told news agency IANS.

The attack came a day after militants targeted an Army patrol with an improvised explosive device at Arihal in the district. A mine protecting vehicle (MPV) of 44 Rashtriya Rifles was completely damaged in the attack  on Monday evening, leaving two soldiers dead and several others injured.

The attacks came in the wake of reports about Pakistan alerting India about militants planning an IED attack in Pulwama.

Earlier in the day, two Jaish-e-Mohammed militants, including one wanted in connection with the Pulwama attack, and an Army soldier were killed in an encounter in Anantnag district.

On Monday, An Army major and a militant were killed, while another officer and two troopers injured in an encounter between the security forces and the ultras in the same district.

Meanwhile, two unnamed militants have shunned the path of violence and surrendered in Pulwama district, a police spokesman said.
