In a scathing attack, BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday called Congress president Rahul Gandhi “sabse ghatiya (cheapest) politician” in Indian political history. The Congress retorted, saying that Rahul does not need a certificate from a party that has people like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah.

Chouhan's statement on Rahul came while talking to mediapersons in Bhopal on the occasion of the BJP's Foundation Day function. Chouhan was answering a query on Rahul’s constant attacks on Modi during election rallies.

Chouhan, known to be a good orator and a balanced speaker, told mediapersons, “Rahul and his Congress are uncultured and their choice of words and language is very cheap.” Then in Hindi, he went on to say, “In Indian political history, the cheapest politician, as far as selection of words, selection of language and common civility go, is Rahul Gandhi.”

Chouhan added, “if someone spits at the sky, the spit lands back on him,” indicating that Rahul’s attacks on Modi would only backfire on the former.

Chouhan's scornful words against Rahul come across as interesting given the backdrop that even though the Congress chief has been attacking Modi and Shah, he had always shown a respectful attitude to Chouhan and even praised him at times during rallies for the Madhya Pradesh assembly election late last year.

Moreover, Madhya Pradesh Congress leaders including Chief Minister Kamal Nath, Digvijaya Singh and Jyotiraditya Scindia have shown public courtesy to Chouhan and paid personal visits to him.

Meanwhile, responding to Chouhan’s attack, Congress media cell chief Shobha Oza said Rahul and the entire Nehru-Gandhi family have always been very upright in public conduct and never stooped in politics.

“We know the history of Modi and Amit Shah and many other BJP leaders as far as their public behaviour and choice of words and language go. Rahulji does not need a certificate from Shivraj Singh Chouhan certainly,” she said.
