Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was allegedly stopped from taking part in Allahabad University programme by the UP government, which resulted in ruckus at the Lucknow airport. Yadav alleged he was stopped at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow by the police in a bid to prevent him from visiting Prayagraj to attend an oath-taking ceremony at the university.

Furious over the treatment meted out to Yadav, SP cadre held dharnas in different parts of Uttar Pradesh. Yadav, in a tweet, said that the present government was scared of an oath-taking ceremony of student leaders.

He accused the present government of stopping him without any clear written orders and alleged that officials were not able to clarify the situation. The incident led to a major rackus in UP legislative council, where the SP leaders stormed into the well and accused the Yogi government of tyranny.

CM Adityanath said Akhilesh was stopped on the insistence of the university administration. The leader of opposition in UP legislative council, Ahmed Hasan, said the Yogi government has invoked an emergency in the state. He further alleged that an SP candidate had won the Allahabad university student union elections, prompting the government to take this step.

BSP supremo Mayawati said it was extremely condemnable and asked whether the ruling BJP was afraid of their alliance because of which it was "resorting to anti-democratic methods".

Mayawati described the episode as "an example of total dictatorship of BJP government".

"This is very unfortunate, and this undemocratic step will be fought at all levels," she said.

"Is the BJP government at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh so afraid of BSP-SP alliance that it is resorting to anti-democratic methods to curb our political activities," she asked.
