Kanakadurga, who made history as one of the two women who entered Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple following the Supreme Court order, is said to have been attacked by her mother-in-law on Tuesday.

After remaining in hiding for several days, Kanakadurga and Bindu Ammini, the other lady who entered the shrine, made their first public appearance at the Arppo Arthavam (hailing menstruation) event in Kochi on Monday. Kanakadurga returned home on Tuesday morning as her leave from work had ended.

Kanakadurga, an employee in the civil supplies department, lives at her in-laws' house at Angadippuram in Malappuram district, along with her husband Krishnanunni, two children, and mother-in-law Sumathi. Fearing public protest after her Sabarimala entry, she gone into hiding with police protection.

Soon after she reached home, Sumathi is said to have picked a fight with Kanakadurga. Sources said Sumathi hit Kanakadurga on her head with a log.

Kanakadurga has sought treatment at the government district hospital in Perinthalmanna. Police have registered a case under IPC section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) against her mother-in-law.

Sumathi has also sought treatment at the same hospital, alleging that Kanakadurga attacked her. However, there are no injury marks on her body and the police are yet to register her complaint.

Meanwhile, hospital sources said that Kanakadurga would be shifted to Manjeri Medical College for CT scan and further tests.

Kanakadurga and Bindu, both below 50 years, reached sannidhanam with police protection in the wee hours on January 2 to become the first women to set foot in the temple after the Supreme Court verdict struck down the custom of barring women of menstrual age from entering the hill shrine.

Bharatbhushan, brother of Kanakadurga, had alleged a conspiracy behind the whole incident. He also said the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Kottayam Superintendent of Police S. Harishankar were behind the conspiracy, according to Manorama News.
