The Yogi Adityanath government is facing scathing criticism from all quarters over the violence in Bulandshahr over alleged cow slaughter on Monday.
On Tuesday, the postmortem of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh, who was killed in the Bulandshahr violence, confirmed he had been shot dead. Shortly after the mob went on a rampage in Bulandshahr, it was claimed Singh had died of injuries sustained in stone throwing, which was disproved by the postmortem. Singh's mobile phone and service revolver were also missing.
Four persons were arrested on Tuesday after police lodged an FIR against over two dozen people for rioting and murder in connection with the violence in Bulandshahr, officials said. As many as 27 people have been named in the FIR, while cases have been lodged against 50 to 60 unidentified people.
The Bulandshahr violence has come as a blow to the Adityanath government and its claims of effectively maintaining law and order in Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, as the violence in Bulandshahr comes just days before the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, the incident has provided much-needed fuel for the opposition to criticise the Adityanath government.
Commenting on the Bulandshahr violence, the Congress said Adityanath should first set his own state in order before going to campaign in other states. Adityanath has been a prominent campaigner for the BJP in the states currently going to polls.
Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav said the Bulandshahr violence was an outcome of a deep-rooted conspiracy. Assailing the Adityanath government, Yadav said the killing of the inspector by the mob amply vindicated the claims there was 'jungle raj' in Uttar Pradesh under the BJP-led government.
Even Om Prakash Rajbhar, a minister in the Adityanath cabinet, assailed the BJP-led government on the Bulandshahr violence, claiming the law and order situation in the state was chaotic.
Meanwhile, Adityanath, who was furious at the Bulandshahr violence, has formed a special investigation team, which has been asked to submit its report in two days. The circumstances leading to the violence in Bulandshahr and the killing of inspector Singh are expected to become clear after the SIT submits its confidential report to the government.
