A state-of-the-art hospital, modernising of rescue centres, surveillance by drones and a 24x7 helpline are some of the measures initiated by the Gujarat government for the conservation of Asiatic Lions in their only abode in the world—the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary.

The decision to set up a state-of-the-art hospital was taken at the 14th meeting of the State Board of Widlife in Gandhinagar on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

The hospital will provide intensive care treatment to the lions.

Recently, the Gujarat government had received flak from various quarters following the death of 23 lions in a short span due to the spread of canine distemper virus.

An amount of Rs 85 crore will be spent on modernising eight rescue centres in the Gir Sanctuary. Besides starting 32 rapid response system and new 24x7 helpline, CCTV will be used to track the movement of the lions. According to Forest Minister Ganpat Vasava, surveillance will be carried out by drone.

According to government official, the chief minister also spoke about a Rs 351 crore long term comprehensive plan, equipped with latest devices, for creating infrastructure for conservation of lions. Rupani also directed the police and the forest department officials to alert and deal sternly with the lion shows allegedly being held in the forest.
