In a move that has raised many eyebrows in Gujarat, Mahendrasinh Vaghela, son of former Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela, resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday.

Mahendrasinh, a former Congress MLA, had joined the BJP three months ago, on the Rath Yatra day. BJP's national president Amit Shah was also present in Gujarat on that day.

Choosing to resign on Dussehra, Mahendrasinh wrote a small note to state BJP president Jitubhai Vaghani saying that he was resigning due to personal reasons.

Shankersinh's displeasure on his son joining the BJP was well known. Though Mahendrasinh has cited personal reasons for the resignation, it is said that it had become difficult for him to stay in the BJP at a time when his father started openly taking on the ruling NDA at the Centre and the BJP in Gujarat.

Though Mahendrasinh had decided to join the BJP last year, he had put off his decision. Sources said Mahendrasinh was upset over not getting a good designation in the party. However, when he joined the BJP in July this year, the saffron party made it clear that his entry was unconditional.

Now, all eyes will be on Mahendrasinh's next move. Whether he will rejoin the Congress or inch closer to the NCP remains to be seen. Shankersinh shares a good relation with NCP leaders.
