A Gujarati couple and their three-year-old daughter were allegedly kidnapped in Libya for a ransom while they were trying to migrate to Portugal.
Kismatsinh Chavda, his wife Heenaben and their daughter Devanshi were taken for a ransom of Rs 2 crore in the North African country while they were attempting to get to Portugal.
Chavda’s brother is settled in the country, according to Mehsana Superintendent of police Himanshu Solanki.
The family of the couple appealed to the authorities on the matter.
The couple started out on their journey on November 29 without out a valid visa and with the help of a Portuguese-based agent who Solanki says was not Indian.
"Chavda’s brother is settled in Portugal, and he was travelling with the help of an agent based in Portugal. The family was travelling with the intention to settle there, and the agents involved in the case are not Indians,” PTI quoted Solanki as saying.
They first left for Dubai from Ahmedabad. From there, they were taken to Libya’s Benghazi city without their knowledge. They are being kept in captivity there as of now.
SP Solanki said that Mehsana Collector SK Prajapatu was informed of the incident.
After the family was abducted, the kidnappers contacted their relatives and demanded the ransom of Rs 2 crore.
The SP has said that the state government and the Ministry of External Affairs have been informed of the kidnapping.
