Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to constitute the Cauvery Management Board immediately.

The CM submitted the memorandum while seeing off the prime minister, who had come down to Chennai to inaugurate the 10th edition of the DefExpo, and to participate in an event at the prestigious Adyar Cancer Institute, at Chennai airport.

“As you are aware, the Supreme Court, in its verdict on 16.2.2018, has directed that a scheme should be formulated by the Government of India within six weeks to implement the notified Final Order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as modified by its judgment. Further, on 9.4.2018, the Supreme Court has clearly stated that the Final Order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal has merged with the judgment of the Supreme Court. Therefore, constitution of the “Cauvery Management Board” has become an integral part of Hon’ble Supreme Court’s judgment,” the CM said in the memorandum.

Describing the plight of farmers of the Delta areas of Tamil Nadu, who are dependent on Cauvery water for irrigation, Palaniswami said, “The farmers are fervently hoping that the above implementation machinery would be constituted by the Government of India to enable them to commence the agricultural operations in the next irrigation season which starts on 1.6.2018.”

The memorandum was released as a press note by the state government’s department of information and public relations.
