Artificial intelligence transforming healthcare and nutrition is no exception. AI-powered meal planning applications can now generate personalised diet plans based on a person’s age, medical history, food preferences, allergies, and lifestyle. Digestive disorders are on the rise globally, and these technologies are being eyed for their potential to help gut health. Despite the positive initial results, the use of AI must be regarded as complementary rather than a substitute for qualified medical opinion.
The link between diet and digestive health
A proper diet is crucial in maintaining good health of the digestive system. Adequate intake of fibre, protein, fruits, vegetables, fermented foods, and water supports normal digestive function and overall gut health. Diet plays an important role in maintaining a healthy gut environment and supporting normal digestion.
Nevertheless, reaching the proper balance in diet is not always easy, because nutritional requirements depend on various factors, including age, lifestyle, previous medical history, food allergies, and personal taste. AI meal planning apps claim to solve this problem by considering these factors and creating personalised meal plans. However, an important question still remains: can an AI app really match the knowledge and judgment of a doctor, or can it only be used as a tool to support them?
Can AI really personalise nutrition?
Unlike traditional diet plans that give general suggestions for a healthy diet, AI-based meal planning programs claim to suggest diets based on individual health information. The health information can be age, gender, body mass, fitness level, dietary preferences, any food allergies or food intolerances, diagnosed diseases like diabetes or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), medication regimen, and individual health objectives.
Some AI systems may also use data from wearable devices, such as physical activity or glucose levels, to generate recommendations.
However, an important question still remains: can AI actually provide reliable dietary advice without a doctor’s judgment? Another important thing that should be considered is how a person’s health data is collected, stored and used, as the quality of recommendations depends on the accuracy of the information provided. Based on the health information, the AI system can recommend portion sizes, suggest substitutes in case of food allergies and food intolerances, and create diets according to nutritional needs. While these recommendations might be helpful, they should support and not replace personalised medical advice. Such personalised dietary plans can encourage people to adhere to their diet plans, which is crucial in the maintenance of digestive health.
Supporting individuals with digestive disorders
Individuals suffering from gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), coeliac disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and food intolerance, generally have to adopt well-thought-out diets in order to cope with their symptoms. AI-driven applications could assist individuals in identifying suitable meal options, tracking food intake and symptoms, and supporting structured dietary approaches under professional guidance. Health solutions could also help manage diet via reminders, tracking nutrition intake and sticking to routine.
Limitations of the application
However, even though there are many advantages of the use of AI-powered meal planning applications, there are also some drawbacks. The first one is the fact that nutritional recommendations that the user gets depend on the accuracy of the information he or she provides and the scientific accuracy of the algorithm used by the application. There might be inaccuracies in relation to portion sizes, nutrient calculations, or the balance of micronutrients, especially in the case of complex health conditions. The second one is the fact that technology can not replace clinical examination, tests and personalised consultations provided by healthcare specialists.
AI-based meal-planning applications are a key example of the technology used in the future of personalised nutrition and can aid individuals in making better nutritional decisions that will benefit their digestive health. However, these cannot replace the practice of diet counselling based on scientific evidence; they can just complement it. With further investigation and validation of AI technology, these may prove to be beneficial for digestive health.
