Australia are arguably the second-best side in T20Is after India and head to T20 World Cup 2026 as serious title contenders. However, the Aussies have been dealt a huge blow with skipper Mitchell Marsh sidelined due to testicular bleeding. Marsh missed Australia's tournament opener against Ireland and likely to be ruled out of the entire tournament.

What is testicular bleeding?

Testicular bleeding is a medical condition caused by the external or internal hemorrhage on the scrotum. The condition could be caused due to a number of reasons like direct rupturing or skin lesions. Apart from blood loss, it can also significantly impact the movement of a person. In Marsh's case, it would be near impossible to play a high-intensity sport like that cricket that demands physical durability.

As per Cleveland Clinic, the following are the symptoms:

  • Severe pain in the testicles
  • Testicles could get swollen
  • There could be bruises in the testicle
  • Person could experience significant bouts of nausea and vomiting
  • Extreme pain in lower abdomen
  • Blood could be spotted in the urine
  • There could be pain while urinating
  • There might be chances of experiencing high fever

Diagnosis:

  • An Ultrasound of the scrotum has to be taken
  • Urine samples need to be collected and sent for tests to evaluate the exact condition
  • Key is to determine what the exact medical condition is - testicular torsion, testicular cancer, hernia, hematocele or just an infection

Treatment and recovery:

Surgery is the most common mode of treatment for testicular bleeding. The key is to control the bleeding and to remove the tissues that are causing harm to the scrotum. General anesthesia is administered to the patient before surgery and during the process, the key part will be about eliminating the dangerous tissue and then filling that void.

While the exact recovery time depends from person to person, testicular bleeding can take upto two months for complete recovery after surgery.
