Preventing digital eye strain is essential in this technology-driven world. Doctors highlighted the need for taking preventive measures to combat 'digital eye strain' as nearly 50 per cent of the population is projected to develop myopia due to prolonged screen time.

The risk particularly lies more among children. However, cases are on the rise among youngsters as well.

Dr Anuj Mehta, Head of Ophthalmology at Safdarjung Hospital said that the Covid-19 pandemic dramatically increased children's screen time, replacing outdoor activities with online learning.

He pointed out that focusing on screens for a prolonged time strains the eye muscles leading to the early onset of myopia.

Experts also highlighted that young people now spend 10 to 14 hours a day on screens, accelerating refractive errors.

We're seeing myopia progression extend into the late 20s and early 30s a worrying trend, said Dr Vijay Mathur from Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, reported PTI.

Eye strain doesn't stop at dry eyes. Poor air circulation, excessive air conditioning and exposure to smoke, all part of sick building syndrome, worsen the issue, affecting overall health.

By taking simple steps such as following the 20-20-20 rule, adjusting display settings, and maintaining proper viewing distances, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of digital eye strain.

Additionally, regular eye exams and incorporating eye-friendly habits, such as blinking regularly and taking breaks can help mitigate the negative effect of prolonged screen time, promoting healthier vision, comfort, and overall well-being.
