The tally of Omicron cases in Karnataka has risen to 19

Most of the patients infected with the new variant of Covid 19 are fully vaccinated

New cases of Omicron version of Covid-19 have been reported from Udupi (73-year-old female and 82-year-old male), Dharwad (54-year-old male), Bhadravathi in Shivamogga district ( 20-year-old female) and Mangaluru (19-year-old female). Karnataka had reported 14 new cases of Omicron earlier. 

Most of the patients infected with the new variant of Covid 19 are fully vaccinated and had no travel history or contact with international travelers. Some developed mild symptoms of the infection while the others were asymptomatic. 

The 54-year-old woman from Dharwad tested positive for Covid 19 on December 5. Her samples were sent for genome sequencing on December 6. Her test results that arrived on Monday confirmed that she was infected with the Omicron variant of Covid 19. The women had been under home isolation and has recovered. However, as a precautionary measure, she has been asked to extend her home isolation for one week. She had 137 primary and secondary contacts, all of whom have tested negative. 

The 19-year-old who tested positive for Omicron is a nursing student. She tested positive for Covid 19 on December 19, after which her samples were sent for genomic sequencing. Another nursing student from the same institution had tested positive for Omicron earlier. 

The patients from Udupi are an elderly couple whose 11-year-old grand daughter had tested positive for Covid 19 on November 26. The couple is double vaccinated. The 73-year-old woman is a cancer patient. 

Of the 19 Omicron patients in the state, 11 have been discharged. 

Karnataka reported 222 new cases of Covid 19 on Monday. Currently, there are 7074 active cases in the state. 

In view of the Covid 19 situation in the state, The state government may issue new guidelines for Christmas and New Year celebrations. 

As many as 158 cases of Omicron have been reported in India so far. The variant of concern has been reported in 11 states and union territories- Maharashtra (54), Delhi (22), Telangana (20), Karnataka (19), Rajasthan(17), Kerala (11), Gujarat (11), Andhra Pradesh (1), West Bengal (1), Tamil Nadu (1), Chandigarh (1).
