In the present scenario, the deluge of COVID-19 infections has led to a severe health crisis, with the second wave hitting us like a hurricane. The most worrisome fact during the ongoing COVID surge is the rapid pace at which India is adding new infections.

We are going through tough times with India crossing the highest per day mark of 3.5 lakh and the country’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen to 1,73,13,163. Death toll has reached 1,95,123, with 2,812 fatalities in a day.

Unfortunately, India now accounts for one in every seven active cases, and one in every 17 deaths globally. We are currently placed third amongst the most-affected countries by active cases, fourth by fatality, second in total number of cases.

In a large study, severe illness was seen in 15.7 per cent of COVID-19 patients following hospitalization. ARDS leading to respiratory failure, cause of death in 70 per cent of fatal COVID-19 cases. Cytokine storm and symptoms of sepsis, cause of death in 28 per cent of fatal COVID-19 cases. Critically ill patients mostly go through a sepsis-like condition cytokine release syndrome and multiple organ failure. Since pharmacological approaches have not shown very promising results, new extracorporeal organ support therapies including hemadsorption and hemoperfusion therapies may be a promising and important therapeutic option to help manage the serious complications in critically-ill COVID-19 infected patients.

These therapies are already being tried by intensivists overseas and in many ICUs across the country. The need of the hour is to increase its usage and include it with the other treatment procedures for COVID-19 infected critically-ill population.
