Netflix has officially renewed its popular political drama "The Diplomat" for a fifth season. The announcement, made on October 29, 2026, comes just two weeks after the release of the show's highly successful fourth season. The renewal is welcome news for fans who were left wondering what happens next after the latest season's dramatic ending.
Although Netflix has not announced an official release date, Season 5 is expected to arrive in late 2027. This estimate is based on the show's previous production schedule. Season 4 began filming in November 2025 and wrapped up production in June 2026 before premiering in October. If the next season follows a similar timeline, viewers could see new episodes towards the end of 2027.
The fifth season is expected to explore the political consequences and personal conflicts created by Season 4's shocking cliffhanger. The complicated relationships between Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) and President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) will remain at the centre of the story. Other familiar faces expected to return include Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn.
Showrunner Debora Cahn will continue to lead the series. She has reportedly planned a clear direction for the main characters but believes their stories still have plenty of room to develop before the show reaches its conclusion.
So far, "The Diplomat" has earned mostly raves from critics and audiences. Season 4, notably, has been widely praised, with many describing it as the show's strongest and most intense season so far. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a 96% critics' score and an 87% audience score. The season initially earned a perfect 100% critics' rating.
The show's earlier seasons have also performed well. Season 1 received 84% from critics and 55% from audiences, while Season 2 scored 95% and 85%, respectively. Season 3 earned 97% from critics and 75% from viewers.
The fourth season's finale, titled "Warships", has been another major highlight. It earned an impressive 9.6/10 on IMDb, making it the highest-rated episode in the series so far.
Fans have particularly praised the fast-moving story, sharp dialogue and convincing performances, especially the exchanges between Kate and Hal. However, some viewers were frustrated by the dramatic cliffhanger and the lack of immediate answers after eight episodes.
