Kate Winslet is set to star in and executive produce "The Unheard", a new Netflix thriller series. The project was announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival, and will be Winslet’s first major drama collaboration with the streamer.
The five-episode limited series is described as a revenge story in the vein of Ridley Scott's "Thelma & Louise," following two sisters on the run after a carefully planned act of revenge goes awry. As police and other unknown forces chase them, the sisters are forced to confront the dark secrets and painful experiences that led them to commit such extreme violence.
Jack Thorne, the Emmy-winning writer behind Netflix’s hit drama "Adolescence", has written all five episodes. Mounia Akl, director of "Costa Brava, Lebanon", will direct the complete series. The show is being produced by Warp Films, Brad Pitt’s Plan B, and Stephen Graham’s Matriarch Productions.
Winslet will star opposite BAFTA-nominated actress Maxine Peake ("Say Nothing"). The two will play the fugitive sisters at the center of the story.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, although Netflix has not yet announced an exact release date.
"The Unheard" adds another major television project to Winslet’s already successful career in limited series. She has built a strong relationship with HBO through three acclaimed dramas.
In "Mare of Easttown" (2021), Winslet played a troubled detective investigating the murder of a teenage mother in a small Pennsylvania town. Her powerful performance earned her a Primetime Emmy.
Her first major HBO limited series was "Mildred Pierce" (2011), a period drama about a divorced mother trying to build a new life during the Great Depression. The role also won Winslet an Emmy.
Most recently, she starred in "The Regime" (2024), a dark political satire about an unstable and paranoid leader of a fictional European country.
