A high-stakes romantic caper is being developed for Netflix by filmmaker Daniel Roher, who most recently made his narrative feature debut with "Tuner". Matthew McConaughey and Zoe Saldaña will headline what is being described as a cross between a romantic comedy and a crime caper.
Titled "Positano", the film revolves around a charming expat jewel thief living a quiet life on the Amalfi Coast, running a small restaurant as a front. His life is turned upside down when he crosses paths with a mysterious rival thief, entangling them both in a dangerous game of cat and mouse and a dangerous score.
The original spec script was written by Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood, the duo behind "Sharper" and "The Sitter". The project is produced by Working Title Films' founders Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan.
The ensemble cast features some high-profile names such as Toni Collette, Karren Karagulian, Salvatore Esposito, Michele Savoia, and Lorenzo De Moor. Principal photography officially commenced in mid-May 2026 on location in Salerno, Italy, featuring picturesque sequences shot on boats along the Mediterranean coast.
Filming is scheduled to run through early August 2026 and will span multiple Italian locales, including Lake Iseo. While Netflix has not finalised an official release date, the film is expected to be a major tentpole release for the streaming service, targeting a mid-to-late 2027 premiere.
Before "Tuner", Roher, who is a Canadian filmmaker, directed the Academy Award-winning political documentary "Navalny". He cut his teeth making investigative and cultural documentaries before recently transitioning into directing narrative fiction feature films.
Roher has already proven himself in the crime thriller/heist area with "Tuner", starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman. It follows a piano-tuning apprentice who uses his hyper-sensitive hearing to crack safes to pay off his mentor's medical debts. It premiered at the Telluride Film Festival.
