After nearly a decade, Emraan Hashmi is returning to the horror genre with "Rooh", touted as a "musical horror" project aiming for a 2027 pan-Indian release in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Hashmi's last horror outing was "Dybbuk", released during the pandemic on Prime Video - a remake of the 2017 Malayalam film "Ezra", from the same director.
"Rooh" is being helmed by director Mayank Sharma, known for Prime Video's "Breathe" and "Breathe Into the Shadows". The script is by Vishal Kapoor, behind the acclaimed "Lapachhapi" (and its remake "Chhorii"), and backed by Vikram Khakhar and Sunny Khanna, under the Vicked Films Productions.
In an official statement to Bollywood Hungama, Hashmi said that "Rooh" has a promising concept. “Rooh is a film that immediately connected with me because it brings together new-age horror, emotion and music in a very powerful way. This is a space that audiences have always associated with me, and the world Mayank is creating feels intense, emotional and cinematic. That is what excited me the most about Rooh, and I am really looking forward to audiences experiencing it on the big screen.”
Adding to this, Mayank Sharma shared, “As someone who has always loved the horror genre... ‘Rooh’ is my attempt to create a film that goes beyond fear. It’s emotionally layered and immersive, with an unsettling atmosphere, and presented in a contemporary cinematic treatment. I’m thrilled to collaborate with Emraan for this deeply layered character. My entire team and I hope to bring audiences a truly unique and unforgettable horror experience.”
The rest of the cast and crew member details are awaited.
Hashmi's previous ventures into spooky territory include: Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009), Raaz 3: The Third Dimension (2012), Ek Thi Daayan (2013), and Raaz Reboot (2016).
