The second official teaser for DC Studios' "Lanterns" has finally given answers to those who found the first teaser disappointing due to a "lack of green" or "lack of ring action". An R-rated superhero series, the show and its makers had already made it clear a while ago that they are going for an investigative narrative in the vein of "True Detective", but with a superhero touch.

The first teaser's relatively grounded, no-VFX approach had many fans irate after they noticed the absence of the magical cosmic elements that are an integral part of the universe of the Green Lantern comics. The new glimpse brings the "green" aspects front and centre, heavily leaning into the power of the rings and the lore while teasing dual timelines.

Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler play the older and newer versions of the Green Lanterns. The second teaser, like the first, brings us more of the humorous, junior/senior dynamic. One exchange in particular is an exercise in subtle humour. Hal Jordan (Chandler) conjures up a currency note using the ring, and John Stewart (Pierre) asks, "Did you just use that ring to counterfeit money?"

The second teaser also prompted discussions for its notable use of an eerie, repetitive voiceover chanting, "Are you afraid?" which hints at some major challenges ahead for the duo. Among the other exciting glimpses, we see Hal donning his official, comic-accurate Green Lantern uniform and venturing into outer space. We also get a glimpse of Sinestro and his past with Hal. Laura Linney ("Ozark") is revealed as a significant character, giving John some motivating advice to… boldly go where no man has gone before.

The dual timeline (2016 and 2026)

Since we see the trailer showing the younger version of John Stewart witnessing the events involving the older Hal Jordan in 2016, and given that we are also seeing them in the present, showrunner Chris Mundy recently confirmed, in a chat with Entertainment Weekly, that the show is set in the past and present simultaneously. The present is basically the events after what transpired in James Gunn's 2025 "Superman" reboot.

On his primary goal, Mundy said: “We wanted to tell an on-the-ground story, and that has a couple of different mysteries inside of it. What we have going for us is that it's a Green Lantern story. They can conjure anything from the ring. They do go off the planet. There are all these other powers that they have. We wanna use everything great about the mythology of the Green Lanterns, but at the same time, we wanted it to feel like an upscale mystery, a very emotionally tangible story about these people that are in it.”

Set for premiere on August 16 on HBO and HBO Max, "Lanterns" was written and created by Mundy in association with Damon Lindelof ("LOST", "Watchmen") and Tom King. It is expected to have its India streaming premiere a day after on JioHotstar.
