After an incredible three-day opening weekend performance and a solid performance on its first Monday (the crucial test), "Karuppu" has officially become not only Suriya's highest-grossing film, but also the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026. It has so far earned around Rs 142 crore worldwide, as per numbers reported by box office portal Sacnilk.
Before "Karuppu", it was "Singam 2", released 13 years ago, that held his career-best lifetime gross record at a range of Rs 120–122 crore. Other outperformed hits of Suriya include "24" & "Singam 3", which earned Rs 118 crore and Rs 113 crore lifetime gross, respectively.
"Karuppu" also overtook Suriya's most recent releases: "Kanguva", which concluded its global theatrical run with a cumulative gross of just Rs 105–110 crore; "Retro", the Karthik Subbaraj film, which earned a worldwide total of Rs 97.35 crore; and "Etharkkum Thuninandhavan" (71.40 crore).
Looking at the individual daily figures earned by "Karuppu" so far, a noticeable drop of 49.6% was observed on Monday, after earning roughly Rs 28.35 crore on the third day since its release, which is the first Sunday.
"Karuppu" recorded an exceptional opening weekend, collecting Rs 120.75 crore worldwide in just three days. This milestone represents a major box office triumph for Suriya, positioning the movie ahead of his previous career-best records and cementing it alongside the elite Tamil blockbusters of the last two years.
Within just three days of release, Karuppu has officially beaten the entire lifetime worldwide collections of Suriya's biggest post-pandemic releases: "Kanguva" and "Retro". It's expected to beat "Singam 2" on the first Monday (Day 4) to become Suriya's highest-grossing film of all time.
The 120 crore worldwide gross was registered after the RJ Balaji directorial collected Rs 28.35 crore on the third day (a 17.4% surge from the Day 2 collection), taking the cumulative India collection to Rs 78.75 crore and total net earnings to Rs 68.00 crore, along with the total overseas gross of Rs 42 crore. Overseas, it collected Rs 47 crore so far. Its India net total comes up to Rs 82.30 crore (and counting).
It goes without saying that "Karuppu", written and directed by RJ Balaji, has become a respite for the Tamil Nadu box office after a long dry spell. Recent releases before "Karuppu", even from big stars like Dhanush and Sivakarthikeyan, haven't been able to demonstrate the same level of might as 'Karuppu swamy'.
For Dhanush, "Kara" was declared a flop; Sivakarthikeyan's "Parasakthi" earned Rs 100 crore through its entire theatrical run, a figure considered 'small' when taking into account the overall budget.
On the other hand, "Karuppu" is expected to reach the 200 crore milestone soon. A formidable saviour for Tamil cinema indeed!
