The Malayalam comedy sequel "Bharathanatyam 2 Mohiniyattam" — a sequel to 2024's "Bharathanatyam" — registered its highest earnings on its second Sunday.
Made on a modest budget, the film, headlined by acclaimed actor Saiju Kurup, is performing impressively at the box office, bolstered by strong word-of-mouth.
On its 10th day, it earned Rs 1.59 crore, which is a significant improvement compared to its earnings on the days before. Sacnilk box office tracker observed a 29.3% growth in net earnings on the second Sunday compared to what it collected on the second Saturday.
This takes the India total gross to Rs 12.14 crore and the net total to Rs 10.53 crore so far. With the overseas gross of Rs 3.10 crore, the film's worldwide total now stands at Rs 15.24 crore.
The film, which earned Rs 0.42 crore on its first day, has shown a slow and steady improvement, with its occupancy increasing from 31% to above 50% in the subsequent weeks. On the 10th, the film witnessed a 62% occupancy, which is the same as its 5th-day occupancy.
The original film, which was released a week after the first "Vaazha" film in 2024, underperformed at the box office but was a big streaming hit, which gave the makers the necessary push to come up with a follow-up that goes for a daring genre shift while also not losing its strong grip on dark humour.
The second film has worked far better for audiences, and is the second Malayalam film currently running in theatres successfully after "Vaazha 2". Interestingly, in a repeat of 2024, "Bharathanatyam 2 Mohiniyattam" also released a week after the "Vaazha" sequel.
In its review of the film, THE WEEK wrote: "'Bharathanatyam 2 Mohiniyattam' proves from its opening moments alone that it exists for a reason, that it wasn't made just for the sake of it. Proper care has been taken to ensure that this follow-up, despite the genre shift, feels like a natural extension of 'Bharathanatyam' as the sequel picks up right after the first."
Directed by Krishnadas Murali, "Bharathanatyam 2 Mohiniyattam" also features Kalaranjini, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jagadish, Vinay Forrt, Baby Jean, Sreeja Ravi, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Swathi Das Prabhu, and Sruthy Suresh in integral supporting roles.
