Rob Reiner's son, arrested for parents’ murders, once co-wrote a film for father

The arrest follows the discovery of his parents' bodies at their Los Angeles home. Authorities are investigating a link between the crime and Nick's well-documented, decades-long battle with drug addiction

Rob Reiner's son Nick Reiner has reportedly been confirmed as the primary suspect in the murder of the celebrated Hollywood filmmaker and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

The Los Angeles police department's Robbery-Homicide division has taken Nick into custody and charged him with two counts of murder, reported People magazine.

The couple was killed at their home on Dec. 14. Their bodies were found by their daughter, Romy.

In a press statement earlier, the LAPD said Nick has been booked for two counts of murder and held without bail. Prior to his arrest, he was under suspicion and questioned by the LAPD after his parents' deaths.

Multiple outlets have reported that Nick had an argument with his parents at a Christmas party prior to their murder. Including Nick, the couple had a total of three children.

It is believed that the altercation is tied to his decades-long struggle with addiction, which he has mentioned publicly in earlier interviews. His father had even directed a film about a character struggling with drug addiction.

The film, Being Charlie, released in 2015, was based on Nick's experiences with addiction and failed attempts at rehabilitation. The latter co-wrote the film with Matt Elisofon.

In fact, he also mentioned earlier, in a 2018 podcast called 'Dopey', that he used to have arguments with his parents while being in the throes of addiction, and also being homeless. He had recalled then that after a brief period of being sober, he went home and turned to drugs again, and that a period of being "sequestered" in his parents' guest house once triggered an outburst.

“I just was like, ‘You know what, I want to go home,’ and so I just stayed sober long enough ‘til I could go home, and then yeah, I just went home and did (drugs),” Nick said in the podcast then. “I got totally spun out on uppers, I think it was coke and something else, and I was up for days on end, and I started punching out different things in my guest house."

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will be taking over the double-homicide case a day later, according to LA police officials, following which it will consider filing charges against him.

A gifted filmmaker as well as actor, Rob Reiner was known for making acclaimed classics such as Misery, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me (based on Stephen King's story) and When Harry Met Sally. He made acting appearances in popular films such as The Wolf of Wall Street, directed by friend and colleague Martin Scorsese. He was the son of legendary actor and comedian Carl Reiner (The Jerk, Ocean's trilogy).
