After a very long wait, Kaithi's sequel is all set to take off. Industry sources reveal that Kaithi 2 will be Lokesh Kanagaraj's next directorial venture. SR Prabhu's Dream Warrior Pictures will bankroll the Karthi-starrer that is set to be a crucial link in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU).
The development comes after Kanagaraj's alleged non-selection as the director for the Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan multi-starrer that is the talk of the town. Reports suggest that Nelson could be directing the film which will be the reunion of Kollywood's biggest icons. Kanagaraj was allegedly one of the main choices but latest updates say that he isn't in the race anymore.
While there are rumours of Kanagaraj doing a Telugu film with Pawan Kalyan or Ram Charan, nothing has materalised just yet. With no immediate commitments, it is time for the 39-year-old to return to the film that established himself as a master of storytelling. Kaithi's sequel has been in the news since 2020 but Kanagaraj was busy with other commitments.
In this gap, Kanagaraj worked with Vijay on two films, Master (2021) and Leo (2023) while teaming up with Haasan for Vikram (2022) in between these two films. Hiss previous release was Rajinikanth's Coolie (2025) that released on August 14 this year. Kanagaraj in numerous interviews has spoken about the importance of Kaithi 2 to the LCU universe.
According to the ace director, Kaithi 2 sets the stage for Vikram 2 which he expects to be the major showdown in his universe. Kaithi was a blockbuster, collecting Rs 106 crore globally despite competing with Vijay's Bigil at the box office. While Karthi will reprise his iconic character Dilli, no other updates are known yet regarding Kaithi 2.
