Amazon Prime Video has officially announced "Quiz from God", a Japanese remake of the acclaimed South Korean medical-crime mystery series "God’s Quiz". The new series will premiere worldwide on December 4, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video.
Set in modern-day Tokyo, "Quiz from God" keeps the original series’ central idea: using medical science and forensic investigation to solve unusual and mysterious deaths. Popular Japanese actor Shotaro Mamiya stars as Haruto Hatsushima, a brilliant medical examiner and former neurosurgeon who is drawn into cases that are often difficult to explain.
Mamiya has said that his connection with the project goes back nearly a decade. He was first approached about the role in his early twenties, meaning the character and the series have been part of his career journey for many years.
The Japanese adaptation is directed by Shunki Hashizume. According to the director, the series will go beyond asking who is right or wrong. It aims to connect the philosophical meaning of its title with the complicated emotions and the characters’ personal struggles. This approach is expected to give the remake its own identity while retaining the basic mystery-driven structure of the original.
The original series became notable for combining two genres that were rarely brought together in Korean television at the time: medical drama and crime investigation.
Rather than focusing mainly on romance or family relationships, "God’s Quiz" followed medical experts as they investigated strange deaths and unexplained cases. Rare diseases were often at the centre of its mysteries, turning medical diagnosis into a form of detective work. Conditions such as porphyria, phenylketonuria, muscular dystrophy and Fabry disease were incorporated into its stories.
The show's popularity also helped establish the idea of a Korean drama continuing across multiple seasons. At a time when most Korean dramas were designed as single-season stories, "God’s Quiz" returned for several instalments. The franchise eventually produced five seasons, ending with "Quiz of God: Reboot" in 2018–2019.
The series also became associated with writer Park Jae-beom, who played an important creative role in its early development. His work on "God’s Quiz" was followed by major television projects including "Good Doctor" and "Vincenzo". "Good Doctor" later got an American adaptation via ABC.
The title itself comes from a Korean expression suggesting that rare diseases are like “quizzes” given by God to remind people of human limitations. This idea became an important part of the original show's identity, allowing medical mysteries to explore broader questions about life, suffering and human nature.
