AR Murugadoss is a busy man these days as the post-production works of his next release Madharasi are going on in full swing. A teaser of the Siva Karthikeyan-starrer left audiences impressed, as did the first single of the film, composed by Anirudh Ravichander. With a solid cast and action genre, anticipation is building for the project, despite Murugadoss's downswing as a director in recent years.
In such a scenario, Madharasi could be a make-or-break kind of project for the director at this juncture of his career. However, here is an interesting bit of info. This film was initially offered to none other than Shah Rukh Khan. Of course, the timeline was different, approximately in the 2016-17 phase when King Khan's Dilwale had released. It was a time when Raees had also gotten delayed and the Imtiaz Ali-directorial Jab Harry Met Sejal was being conceptualised.
It was at this time that Murugadoss pitched a character arc to Shah Rukh, with the script not yet completed at the time. The Bollywood superstar liked the character instantly but with his hectic schedule, couldn't give a go-ahead to the project.

"Just the character I told him long back," said Murugadoss in an interview with Baradwaj Rangan.
"It was more of a character arc and just an idea of the film. What the idea was, I shall tell you after Madharasi releases. Ravi K Chandran had arranged this meeting and the three of us sat together. He really liked the idea but later on, there was no communication on this regard and I also left it."
With the big names like Mani Ratnam and Shankar going through a rough patch, Murugadoss knows that it is important to upgrade with the trends of the era. His writing, once a USP of his films, has certainly taken a hit. The Salman Khan-starrer Sikandar was a failure in all aspects and left us wondering as to what happened to the Murugadoss who delivered gems like Kaththi, Ramana, Thuppaki and Dheena.
Siva Karthikeyan is riding a good wave after the historic success of Amaran and that film suggested that the action zone may not be a misfit for the young star, as was initially touted by the pundits. Will his good luck shine on Murugadoss and Madharasi? Only time will tell.
