John Abraham's long-delayed geopolitical thriller Tehran, which was completed three years ago and originally planned for a theatrical release, is going for a direct-to-digital premiere, on Zee 5 (rebranded as Z5), on Independence Day.
The announcement was made by Zee5 on their social media pages with a poster of a bruised and shabby Abraham, along with the caption, "Dilli mein ek blast ne sirf ek embassy nahi, ek soye hue junoon ko jaga diya.#Tehran Coming Soon, only on #ZEE5."
The poster comes with the tagline, "Hunted by Iran. Abandoned by Israel. Deserted by India."

Produced by Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films, along with Sandeep Leyzell, and Shobhna Yadav, the film was co-written by Ritesh Shah and Ashish Prakash Verma. The trailer for Tehran is expected to be revealed on August 1.
Tehran is directed by Arun Gopalan (known for "Tariq"). Abraham had hinted that the film is connected to real-world events, such as the Russo-Ukrainian war, Iran-Israel conflict, and others. In a 2022 conversation with Filmfare, the actor had said, "If you’re invested in the Russia-Ukraine crisis, wonder what China is doing, what Iran is doing, where does Palestine fit in this whole thing, Tehran is about all of this. It’s a stunning film."
Manushi Chhillar, Madhurima Tuli, Neeru Bajwa, and Elnaaz Norouzi are the other actors in the film.
It's not yet known whether the film is inspired by the Apple TV+ series of the same name that premiered in 2020.
