In an effort to instil standardised ticket rates as well as regulate the cost of food and beverages provided in theatres, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has directed officials to ensure uniform implementation across the state.

"The government departments must perform their duties diligently, ensuring fair practices in pricing and operations," Kalyan said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), according to a briefing by Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh. The actor-turned-politician criticised the inflated prices of theatre delicacies like popcorn, drinks, and bottled water, and urged that the officials maintain control over its cost and quality.

He remarked that the government has noted the monopolistic control in multiplexes and single-screen theatres, making the experience difficult to enjoy for moviegoers. Kalyan added that an investigation is underway. He also suggested that the high price of refreshments may be the cause of low family turnout in theatres and that the opposite could combat the issue.

Additionally, he insisted that clean drinking water should be available in cinemas, overseen by the municipal authorities. He also alleged involvement of political figures, including those from his party, Jana Sena, in the shutdown of theatres across Andhra Pradesh. Strict action will be taken against those involved, the 53-year-old said.

If a film requires a hike in ticket prices, Kalyan said that the producers should apply for permission through the Telugu Film Industry Council rather than making individual appeals to the government.

This policy, he said, also applies to his film Hari Hara Veera Mallu, which is scheduled to hit theatres next month.
