On March 7, Tamil superstar Vijay hosted an Iftar gathering to commemorate breaking fast at sundown during the month of Ramadan. The event saw invitations extended to imams of 15 mosques, with a total of 3,000 attendees at Royapettah’s YMCA grounds. The actor reportedly observed a full day of abstinence from food and water and offered prayers before breaking the fast.
The gesture quickly became viral on the internet, with many lauding Vijay, born to a Christian father and Hindu mother, for embracing diversity. However, it seems that his grand gesture has now landed him in some legal trouble. According to a report by News18, the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath has lodged a complaint against the 50-year-old at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office, alleging that the event was poorly organised, and hosted “drunkards” who had “nothing to do with Iftar” which “insulted Muslims”.

The complaint was filed by Syed Kous, the treasurer of the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath. Speaking to the media, Kous stated, “Muslims were insulted at the Iftar program organised by Vijay. We believe the participation of drunkards and rowdies who had nothing to do with fasting or Iftar has insulted Muslims.”
Kous further added that the event was coupled with many mishaps due to disorganisation. “Legal action should be taken against Vijay to ensure that this does not happen again. We did not file a complaint for publicity," he said.
Vijay, who launched his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party a year ago, is actively preparing for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections.
