The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday accorded ‘Y’ category security to actor-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C Joseph Vijay. However, the security cover will be provided for the actor-politician only within Tamil Nadu.

Y scale security is the basic level of protection given to those who work in the public domain. Vijay will now have round-the-clock protection by Personal Security Officers (PSOs) along with an armed guard at his residence and other places of stay. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will be entrusted with the Kollywood icon's security cover.

Y scale security usually comprises eight CRPF personnel, two commandos and additional police personnel. It also includes two vehicles.

Vijay, who launched his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in 2024, just ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, has turned into a sensation in Tamil Nadu politics. An actor at the peak of his career, Vijay took an active plunge in politics and declared the ruling BJP at the centre and the DMK in Tamil Nadu as its ideological and political enemies respectively. Vijay’s entry has shaken the political equations in the state with both the Dravidian majors - AIADMK and the DMK - revamping their party structures in the run-up to the 2026 assembly elections.

While there have been talks about the AIADMK and TVK coming together to face the next election in an alliance, Vijay is yet to reveal his plans for the election. A week before, political strategist, Prashant Kishore who once worked for the BJP and Narendra Modi and then for the DMK in Tamil Nadu called on Vijay at his Panaiyur residence, making the political observers in the state give various reasons for the meeting.

Vijay is yet to pronounce his party ideologies and come up with a complete organisational structure for the party. The Y security at this juncture for Vijay has raised several eyebrows.
